A short story of a woman who looks to the stars as she tries to protect her children and offer them a future. In a world with no escape for those who cannot undergo a genescan, a fugitive mother has vanishingly few options left to her. Ultimately, only her sacrifice can change the world… but what becomes of the children?

Stargazer eBook Cedar Sanderson

A woman has to make a nearly impossible decision for her children.

This is a short story and I don't want to give too much away about the actual story. I will say that I don't know if I totally bought the reasoning of the two characters. They both made big decisions with almost no real information. This story really begs for a larger stage than it is given. But I am not sure if it would work as well with that larger stage. Perhaps adding more detail and time would lessen the impact even if it did make the decision process more believable. But when your biggest complaint is that you want the story to last longer, you know that the author is doing something right. I say give this one a try, you won't regret it.

Don't bother
I just finished Stargazer. My lower lip will never be the same! I like that I can feel the woman's pain - how can a mother...oh sorry! You have to read it yourself! It's good! Very good!
Intriguing little story with the pathos of Celtic myth in a galactic setting. Hopefully, this sets the stage for a novel or two or three. I wanna know what happens next!!!!
Cedar has written a very evocative launch pad for a good, long novel about a universe with interesting twists (which she hints at in this very good beginning, IMHO.
Great short story. It quickly gripped me, and the angst of a mother giving up her children to a better live without her was real and touched me. Can this grow into a follow-on with the children in their new home?
That title line is correct this is a story about love, but not a love story. OK, the premise might be a bit iffy, but who cares? This is also a story about freedom, and what it costs to obtain. Even this Totally Unreconstructed Romantic who likes happy ending can see the joy at the end, even if filtered through tears.

Bittersweet. Recommended.
A short story that offers a taste of an intriguing, alien world and history. In brief, a mysterious woman makes a living for herself and her twin children by performing a deadly dance with swords in the street. She approaches a man and lays a strange but somehow irrefusable charge on him while she accomplishes a mission of her own.

All questions are answered at the end, but new ones are raised, and the possibility of a larger story. The story is well written with the feel almost of a fairy tale, but frustrating. I felt it could have been longer or, failing that, I was left wanting to know how events will unfold in the aftermath.
