This is the 6th book in the series by the author. It is a gripping account of her experiences as the director of programs at a TV station in Shanghai. This book can serve as a primer about how to develop a program and obtain funding for it. Details of her efforts are astonishing. The reader learns of the author's efforts and work to function within a restrictive system, circumventing and working within it. Fascinating accounts are given of her efforts to develop children's programs, work with parents, and to find funding by visits to potential sponsors. Also given are important influences of her programs and the public responses. The author also describes how she is able to use her programs to deal with abuse of women in the workplace. The book also delves into the lives of colleagues and friends, giving details of their lives in China. It shows the context of the Chinese society at that time and the changes affecting society. The book ends with the author's exit to Japan on a student visa as she looks forward to a new beginning. I recommend this book highly for its engaging and lively account of the author's life and experience in China at that time.
I have now read all the books written by Quiyin Emurian. Most interesting, especially the life during the Cultural Revolution in China, but nearing the end of "Lonely at the Top" I must admit I am getting bored with the story as the detail of some experiences gets too much.
I have been following her series. This volume told stories of her career as a TV director. They were very interesting. It was so hard to raise a young boy and be successful in her career. It made me feel sad to read about her boy waiting for her in the evening alone. She was so dedicated and worked hard, but still had to face politics in the workplace. Too bad she had to leave China and leave the work she loved. I am curious about the relationship between her and her husband, and the challenges in Japan.
